âARE YOU SURE YOU WANT us there?â Kaylin asked Max. Heâd called and invited her and the twins to his place to meet their new dog. He sounded so excited. Breathless about it. Brody and Taylor had come home from their sleepover weekend at Maxâs full of stories and giggles about Lily and Willow, but Kaylin hadnât met them yet. She wasnât sure that she wanted to or that she should.
Sheâd been content with things being strictly professional with Max.
Mostly. Unless he was doing something like stretching, or lifting heavy objects, or exposing his forearms, or smiling, or making a joke, or carrying one of her boys.
Or breathing.
She sighed and ignored her thoughts, tucking them away under a rock in the basement of her mind.
âIt would be best for the boys to meet Jackson when Iâm here,â Max said. âDo they have experience with big dogs?â
âNo.â Another thing she hadnât exposed them to, she mentally conceded. Her momâs dog had passed before her mother had and Kaylin hadnât had the time or the money to get a dog, although she loved them. âI love dogs,â she admitted. âBut I havenât met your daughters. Do you think thatâs wise?â
It was a broad hint that things were moving out of the professional realm and into the personal. She held her breath as the phone went silent.
After a moment, Max replied. âI figure weâre both new to town and weâve both got kids who need friends. We do, too. We can be friends, so our kids have each other. It wonât be for long because my girls will age out of wanting to entertain young kids, but I donât see how it can hurt any of them. Or us.â
âOr us,â she repeated, liking the sound of his plan. âFriends, then. Weâll be over in half an hour.â
Sheâd had a hard but satisfying work week and she was proud of the work done on Maxâs kitchen. Hoping his daughters liked the end result, she mentally rearranged her plans for the day. Sheâd hit the Good Value Foods after they met the dog. Then sheâd get fuel for her truck and take a big load of laundry to the Wash ânâ Suds because her landlord had installed a lock on the utility room door.
Fine. At first, sheâd been angry about his childish response. But now it was proof she needed to move ASAP. Sheâd start looking for a new place to live today. By the time she had the boys dressed she was wearing a smile. She hoped her dungeon of an apartment took months to rent after she moved out and her landlord got rotten tenants next time.
Sheâd wanted to put those moments at the home supply store and in the park with Max out of her mind, but since then when theyâd shared a laugh or admired what theyâd accomplished together in the kitchen sheâd experienced warm and friendly thoughts. Friendly.
She needed to focus on being friends with Max so Taylor and Brody could have Lily and Willow in their lives for a while.
